2023 Living Building Challenge Entry

Serotine, meaning ‘late in flowering, or developing’, is a project that operates on sensitivity; a gentle intuition regarding its surroundings, an awareness and respect of the natural environment, and roots steeped in the social fabric of community.

This project is the tangible embodiment of the Living Building Challenge’s flower framework, and proudly venerates the rich landscape and surroundings of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong people. Serotine prioritises education and inspiration through design, offering a dynamic, optimistic approach to collective, creative living.

Specifically calibrated in response to its site of origin, Serotine is elementally tethered to place. It could not exist anywhere else. This methodology extends to orientation, materials, colour, form, and the verdant landscape which surrounds it, planted with edible indigenous species.

In this way, Serotine is a distinctively multisensory building, one that completely rethinks the sights, sounds, and smells of a retired brutalist structure through new, lightweight additions. These additions touch the earth lightly. They do not erode, disturb or infringe upon land. Rather, Serotine elevates and edifies. It stimulates and brightens, it generously provides. Serotine gives rise to a restored landscape, to nurture a restored community.
